New location-based live action spy game, Dead Drop, coming to Android soo

Dead Drop from LIME on Vimeo.

Fans of location-based games have another title to try out coming your way soon. Dead Drop is a location-based spy game developed by two brothers that will actually be bringing something a little new to the table when it comes to location-based games.

What is new about this game is that it actually brings two different gameplay modes with it which really doesn't happen in location-based games. Usually they are just straight up multiplayer games. Dead Drop on the other hand doesn't just come with a multiplayer mode, called Multiplayer Classic, it also comes with a single-player game mode, called Campaign Training mode. The multiplayer mode will be regulated by the game itself and will set everything up for you.

Dead Drop will also come with a neat prospect for local businesses in that they can participate as a Safe House where people can go to in order to be safe. Opponents will still be able to see where you are but you won't be eliminated or attacked. Dead Drop coordinates individual and group games of any size, in which players receive live-action missions to complete in their communities. Smartphones with built-in GPS receivers allow the app to moderate games, enforce rules, and verify eliminations in real-time.

This game is set to be released within the next 30 days according to the press release and after the release the brothers will be working on adding new features including more weapons, disguises, skins, mini-games, multiplayer modes, and augmented reality features.

[UPCOMING GAME] The Sims FreePlay expected on Android this month

The Android platform is beginning to really prove itself in the gaming sector, but given our growing world of connected devices, the Android Market is really just the tip of the iceberg. Game publishers recognize that the consumer’s desire for on-demand gaming presents an opportunity for cross-device networks, and big players like EA and Gameloft are taking matters into their own hands.

EA’s hoping to keep up with the mobile sector’s rapid growth, likening its plans with online gaming platform Origin to that of Apple iTunes or Amazon’s online storefront. They’re looking for a direct route to the consumer, transitioning to a world of software downloads that have become so prevalent in the mobile world. They’re cutting out the middle men, reducing costs and carving out distribution channels across existing platforms, a very important one being Android’s OS.

Sharpening their focus on Android, EA is taking cues from other game publishers like Kongregate that recognize the opportunity in being their own “middle man” for mobile software. While EA has revealed few details regarding their game plan for Android releases, it’s expected that The Sims FreePlay will hit the Market sometime this month.

Gameloft LIVE! in the Android Market

Gameloft has also soft-launched its Xbox-style social service, called Gameloft LIVE!. Available in the Android Market, you’ll be able to socialize around your games, inviting friends to an ongoing game, send messages and chat in real time. You get a custom avatar, you can share your scores and earn virtual currency to be redeemed in other games. The hub also provides direct access to Gameloft titles. It’s a natural progression for Gameloft, which started their mobile distribution through direct access only. Warming up to the Android Market, Gameloft’s now competing with other socially-driven game networks like Papaya that established their platforms in Android’s early days.

Android games on TV

And moving beyond smartphones and tablets, Unity3D looks to connected televisions for extended Android game distribution. Teaming with LG, Unity3D delivers several of its titles, including Frisbee Forever and Shadowgun, to the LG Smart TV (which supports GoogleTV). Given Google’s own plans for connected televisions, they’ll become a home-centric branch for Android distribution, and the Android Market and other publisher-powered game stores will in many ways take over the game console, stirring up more trouble for Sony, Microsoft, Sega and Nintendo. The upside? Sony and Microsoft have both initiated mobile platform strategies for their future distribution goals through Android.

Rumor: Zenonia 4 from Gamevil coming this week to Android

Today we are seeing rumors of Gamevil's next addition to the Zenonia RPG series and that it will be making its way to Android by the end of this week. Zenonia 4 is the much anticipated addition to the Zenonia series which many people have been waiting awhile for. Currently available for iOS already, Android users generally have to wait a few months between the iOS and Android release of Zenonia games from Gamevil.

This does put the time frame for a new release at around the perfect time this week. Also on Twitter, Gamevil has been saying that it would be arriving shortly although they have been saying that since January. Lately though it seems like they have been talking more about it coming to Android which is a good sign. If it follows the iOS version, which is most likely will in terms of content, here is what we can look forward to:
 - THE BEST-LOOKING ZENONIA® EVER
- Explore the overworld in vivid HD, now with spectacular visuals and top-notch animations optimized for Retina displays. -
 DYNAMIC AND VISCERAL COMBAT
- Become a force to be reckoned with -- unleash powerful combo hits and devastating skills with explosive graphical and aural flair.
- GEAR UP AND CUSTOMIZE FOR EPIC ADVENTURE
 - Choose the best strategy and equip your Slayer, Blader, Ranger or Druid class hero with countless armor options, weapons and items.
 - DEFINITIVE ACTION RPG EXPERIENCE
- Level up through Normal, Hard and Hell mode. Master the Fairy sync system and annihilate hundreds of normal and legendary monsters.
 - CHALLENGE THE WORLD IN EXPANDED PVP
- Tackle asynchronous online PvP with the new 2-on-2 arena battles or compete in the Abyss zone for loot drops, and hire other player data as mercenaries. The Execution Room and classic 1-on-1 rumbles also return.
We do get to enjoy PvP once more and it will come with a new team-based 2-on-2 arena for some team PvP action which will be great. There is also the new Abyss Zone for trying to snag loot and of course you can use other players once again to help you out by using their player data. As with all rumors though, as well as release dates, take it with a grain of salt as things change pretty quickly when it comes to game development.
We are trying to get confirmation from Gamevil as to whether this rumor is true or not. It will also be Xperia Play optimized and will be free when it is launched. Update Feb. 8th 2012 8:47am: Quick update. It looks like the rumors are true. Apparently Gamevil stated it was coming this week (as long as nothing major happens) on the official Facebook page to some users in the comments. Thanks to BloodyVitaminQ for the heads up!

Games Decreasing In Popularity On Android, Entertainment Apps On The Rise

The mobile app ecosystem is growing so quickly – exponentially, even – that sometimes it’s hard to see the larger trends occurring in the space. To really gain insight, it helps to look back over a longer period of time, like a year for example, in order to take stock of the changes taking place.
To that end, I reached out to mobile app search company Chomp, who kindly obligated my curiousity by packaging together its first ever annual app search analytics report. The report digs into the data from Chomp’s 1 million app searches per month, to reveal trends in app prices, category share, top apps and more.
Note: The data below is conclusive for 2011, but Chomp’s Android app was only released in February. Chomp felt the graphs looked better starting from May, when data stabilized on both platforms.
To begin, Chomp took a deep dive in category share trends. The very first finding was a bit surprising. Chomp found that games are now seeing a decreasing number of downloads on Android. That’s interesting because we’ve come to think of the mobile gaming market as this booming space, which is defining itself as the top category driving mobile app download growth. But, based on Chomp’s data at least, this is only true for iOS. Over the course of the year, games became an increasingly large percentage of iTunes downloads, but have been decreasing on Android.
In December, for example, games were 36.1% of iTunes downloads and 22% of Android downloads.
So if not games, what’s growing in popularity on Android? I would have guessed Utilities but would have been wrong. It’s Entertainment apps. This includes apps like Netflix, Talking Tom, Crackle and Flixster, to give you an idea.
Meanwhile, on iTunes, music and fitness apps have been seeing increased popularity, and utilities are decreasing. Again, this goes contrary to popular belief that normal users (the non-technical/non-early adopters) are looking for more mobile tools – things that help them get a specific task done. Clearly, they’re also enjoying apps Spotify, Mog, RunKeeper and Nike Fitness, too.
In terms of app pricing, iTunes has seen purchase prices rise by 50% while Android prices have dropped. During December, the average iTunes app purchase price was $0.67 while the average Android app purchase price was only $0.09.
But here’s another interesting twist: the average purchase price for just paid apps is higher on Android ($3.17) than on iTunes ($2.41). This is due to iTunes’ large number of $0.99 downloads, however, which throw off the average.
It also has to be noted that Android sees a really low number of paid downloads (5%) compared with iTunes (22%), according to Chomp.
Finally, Chomp revealed its top 10 iTunes and Android apps of the year. These are different lists than what the app store itself would show, as they’re based on Chomp’s searches, not raw download numbers.
On Android, the top apps were:
  1. Pandora
  2. Facebook
  3. Lookout Mobile Security
  4. Zedge Ringtones
  5. Advanced Task Killer
  6. Handcent SMS
  7. Dolphin Browser
  8. The Weather Channel
  9. TuneIn
  10. GasBuddy
On iOS, they were:
  1. Angry Birds
  2. Facebook
  3. Dropbox
  4. IMDb
  5. Pandora
  6. Angry Birds Seasons
  7. SoundHound
  8. Netflix
  9. Angry Birds Rio
  10. Instagram (also Apple’s pick for “app of the year”)
These lists really help to showcase the differences between the two mobile platforms. Although Entertainment apps may be on the rise, Android users are still focused on tools and utilities, from mobile anti-virus programs and task killers, to things that will enhance or replace stock apps, like Handcent SMS or the Dolphin web browser. It will be interesting to see if, by next year, these trends will have changed at all, allowing the increasingly popular Entertainment-focused apps to emerge on the top Android apps list.
On iOS, there’s definitely more focus on having fun, with three versions of Angry Birds, music and photo apps, and Netflix, making the cut. The only remotely “utility-like” app on iOS’s like would be Dropbox.
Overall, the most interesting thing about this report was how it helped reframe some common misconceptions – that Android users only like utilities, for instance, or how cheap the paid Android apps are. They may be few and far between, but they’re not necessarily cheap.
Chomp’s full report includes its own Staff Picks section and a look into Chomp’s traffic search trends, too. (Contact the company if you’re in need of a copy). And may I just say: more data like this, please.

[UPCOMING GAME] Temple Run on February 9th

If you are an Android user, this is a dream come true. Yes, Temple Run, the most popular iOS Game is now coming to Android soon, mostly 9th of this month. With millions of downloads, Temple Run topped the charts in iOS Gaming. Developed by Imangi Studios, the Temple Run is yet to be made available for Android, the most used mobile OS.

There were several reasons for why Temple Run was not available on Android so far – May be there weren’t enough mobiles on the market to be capable of running this Game smoothly. So Hardware could have been a major reason. Or it could have been the complexity to develop such Addictive graphic game play on Android. Whatever be the speculation, finally its Official that Imangi will be making the game available for Android. Its no surprise that, there’s a new team involved in developing the Android version. Will it still be Free? I guess so. Initially, when the game was launched for iPhone, it was priced at 0.99 cents. Then the in-app purchases made the game to be free

Since then, there have been 20 million downloads, 7 million Daily Active Users and many best app awards for Temple Run. The game play is simple. You are an explorer running through the Temple, collecting coins, power ups and escape from the animals that chase you. This is an addictive cum endless game, which makes it a huge hit among mobile gamers. You try to beat your own score and eventually end up playing hours of Temple Run. The in-app purchases are not compulsory as you can earn them as you play more and more. This makes Temple Run as one of the best free games made ever.
